Pain and reduced mobility can affect how you work, exercise and enjoy everyday life. At Nucellin, we assess your symptoms, movement and imaging together to understand what may be contributing to the problem and which treatment is appropriate.
Dr. Heejun Kim, a board-certified orthopedic specialist in South Korea, personally evaluates each patient. Consultations are available in English. Your plan may include rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, a targeted injection or a selected biologic procedure, with image guidance when appropriate.
Our goal is meaningful improvement in pain, movement and the ability to tolerate daily activity.
What Regenerative Medicine Means
Regenerative medicine is a broad field concerned with restoring or supporting the function of damaged tissues. In orthopedic practice, the term often includes treatments prepared from blood or other tissues, sometimes called orthobiologics.
These treatments differ in their composition, purpose and clinical evidence. Symptom improvement does not necessarily mean that damaged tissue has regenerated.
At Nucellin, we consider selected biologic treatments within a wider orthopedic care plan. Rehabilitation, load management and appropriate pain treatment help address the functional demands placed on the affected area.
The central question is what will help you move and function better, given your diagnosis and current tissue capacity.
How We Assess Your Condition
Imaging and Symptoms Must Be Considered Together
Two people with similar MRI or X-ray findings may have very different levels of pain and function. We therefore consider imaging alongside:
- Where and when symptoms occur
- Movements that reproduce pain
- Joint mobility, strength and stability
- Muscle guarding and compensatory movement
- Nerve-related findings
- Tolerance for walking, work, exercise and everyday tasks
MRI and ultrasound can show structural abnormalities and signs of inflammation. However, imaging alone cannot fully explain pain, movement confidence or the amount of activity a person can tolerate.
Treatment Depends on Your Current Capacity
An acutely painful or unstable area may need protection and symptom control first. A repeatedly overloaded tendon or joint may need changes in activity and progressive strengthening. A specific local problem may justify a targeted procedure.
We identify the likely contributors to pain, assess whether a procedure has a reasonable role and sequence treatment around your response. Rehabilitation may be the main treatment or may accompany a procedure.
Treatment Options
Activated PRF Therapy
Activated platelet-rich fibrin is prepared from your own blood using the clinic's platelet-and-fibrin preparation protocol. It may be discussed for selected joint or soft-tissue problems after assessment.
PRF and PRP are related blood-derived preparations, but their processing, activation and fibrin characteristics can differ. Evidence for one preparation cannot automatically establish the effectiveness of another. We explain the proposed protocol, the evidence relevant to your condition and the alternatives before treatment.

Autologous Cell-Based Treatments
Autologous means that the material comes from your own body. Cell-based preparations may be obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow or adipose tissue, but these sources and the resulting preparations are not interchangeable.
| Source | What patients should understand |
|---|---|
| Peripheral blood | Processing may concentrate particular blood-cell fractions. A blood-derived preparation should not be assumed to contain a clinically meaningful stem-cell population solely because it is described as “blood stem cell therapy.” |
| Bone marrow | Bone marrow preparations contain a mixture of cells and other components. Bone marrow concentrate is not a purified stem-cell product. |
| Adipose tissue | The preparation depends on the harvesting and processing method. Processed fat tissue and isolated cell preparations are different products. |
The role of these treatments depends on the specific preparation and condition. Evidence remains limited for many orthopedic applications. Before considering a procedure, we discuss its source, processing method, intended use, relevant evidence, risks and alternatives. Availability also depends on the specific procedure and applicable requirements in South Korea.

Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy uses externally delivered acoustic energy. It may be considered for selected tendon and soft-tissue conditions, such as certain chronic tendinopathies and calcific tendon disorders.
Focused shockwaves and radial pressure waves have different physical characteristics. The choice of treatment depends on the target, depth and clinical indication. Shockwave therapy may accompany rehabilitation when appropriate.
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
Rehabilitation helps rebuild movement, strength and tolerance for activity. Your plan may include progressive exercise, load modification, movement retraining and selected hands-on or device-based treatments.
The orthopedic assessment guides the treatment goals, which are reassessed as your symptoms and function change. After a procedure, rehabilitation is adjusted to the treated structure and its recovery requirements.

Other Targeted Injections
Selected patients may be offered injections directed toward a joint or soft-tissue target. Options may include PDRN-based treatment when appropriate to the diagnosis and intended use. The evidence and expected benefit are discussed for the specific condition.
Ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance may be used depending on the procedure and target.
Your Treatment Journey
1. Consultation and examination. Dr. Kim reviews your symptoms, previous treatment, medical history, activity goals and available imaging.
2. Diagnosis and treatment planning. We discuss the likely contributors to pain, suitable options and whether further imaging or surgical assessment is needed.
3. Procedure, when indicated. The preparation, image guidance, anaesthesia requirements, risks and written estimate are explained before you proceed.
4. Aftercare and rehabilitation. You receive guidance on activity, symptom management and the next steps in recovery.
5. Reassessment. Follow-up considers pain, movement, strength and daily function. Treatment is adjusted according to your progress.
Who May Benefit
A selected regenerative procedure may be considered when symptoms continue despite appropriate initial care, a plausible treatment target has been identified and there is evidence supporting a reasonable role for that procedure.
Suitability also depends on structural damage, joint stability, general health, previous treatment and your ability to follow the recovery plan.
Some conditions require a different priority. Infection, a displaced fracture, a tendon rupture requiring repair, significant instability or progressive neurological problems need appropriate assessment and treatment. Advanced joint damage may be more predictably managed with surgery.
Expected Benefits, Risks and Recovery
What Improvement May Look Like
Depending on the condition and treatment, useful improvement may include less pain, better movement and greater tolerance for walking, work or exercise. We agree on practical goals and assess progress against them.
Current non-surgical treatments cannot reliably restore all lost cartilage, rebuild a normal joint or guarantee that surgery will be avoided. Outcomes vary, and some patients do not experience meaningful benefit.
Potential Risks
Risks vary by procedure and may include soreness, swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, temporary worsening of symptoms and injury to nearby structures. Bone marrow or adipose harvesting adds collection-site risks, while anaesthesia has its own considerations. Using your own tissue does not eliminate these risks.
Recovery Is Individual
Shockwave therapy, blood-derived injections and procedures involving bone marrow or adipose harvesting have different recovery requirements. Your plan will specify activity restrictions, when to begin or progress exercise and when to return for review.
Some responses develop over weeks or months. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be reassessed rather than assumed to be part of recovery. Seek prompt medical advice for fever, increasing redness, severe worsening pain or new weakness or numbness after a procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Regenerative Medicine the Same as Stem Cell Therapy?
No. Cell-based procedures are one part of a much broader field. At Nucellin, any selected biologic procedure is considered alongside conventional orthopedic care and rehabilitation.
Can Treatment Regrow Cartilage?
Reliable restoration of all lost cartilage should not be expected. Pain and function may improve without substantial structural change, and the evidence varies by treatment and condition.
Is Activated PRF Better Than PRP?
A different preparation is not automatically a better one. The relevant questions are how the product is prepared, what condition is being treated and what evidence supports that specific use.
Which Cell Source Is Best?
There is no single best source for every condition. Blood-, bone marrow- and adipose-derived preparations differ, and a more invasive collection method does not establish superior effectiveness.
Do I Need an MRI Before My Appointment?
Not necessarily. Bring existing images and reports if available. Additional imaging is recommended when it is likely to change the treatment plan. Nucellin does not have an on-site MRI scanner; when needed, imaging can be arranged at a nearby radiology centre.
How Much Does Treatment Cost?
Cost depends on the procedure, treatment sites and associated care. We provide a written estimate before the procedure. Please contact the clinic for an individual assessment and quotation.
How Long Should I Stay in Seoul?
The recommended stay depends on the proposed treatment and need for follow-up. Procedures involving bone marrow or adipose harvesting require additional planning. Contact us before finalising travel arrangements; treatment suitability is confirmed through clinical assessment.
